Aligned with the UP College of Medicine and Philippine General Hospital, the UP-PGH DPBM aims to produce five-star psychiatrists who are competent as clinicians, educators, researchers, social mobilizers and leaders. The graduates of the UP-PGH DPBM training program should be specialists with a generalist orientation, and psychiatrists who are responsive to the health issues of the country.
The DPBM’s three-year Residency Training Program aims to provide competency-based training to develop psychiatrists who are able to synthesize the requisite knowledge, skills and proper attitude in the delivery of creative, competent and consistent psychiatric care and mental health promotion.
The curriculum manifests the biopsychosocial and spiritual approach, integrating principles in psychodynamic psychiatry and specialized branches such as consultation-liaison psychiatry, social and community psychiatry, child psychiatry, and behavioral medicine. These are imparted through an integration of formal and informal learning activities. Examples of formal learning activities are didactics, clinical group/individual supervision, and case conferences. Examples of informal learning activities are in and outpatient care, community services, and assisting in undergraduate work. Supervision is emphasized as a method of learning. Clinical supervision has been considered as the cornerstone of clinical education in our training program. All residents are expected to develop their skills in psychiatric evaluation, assessment, diagnosis, psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy during supervision.
The Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship is a two-year comprehensive program designed to provide a graduated and systematic learning process in the psychiatric assessment and management of children and adolescents. The program accepts four fellows, with two fellows per year level.
The Consultation-Liaison Fellowship is a two-year, full-time program designed as a longitudinal course. It provides a learning atmosphere where knowledge and skill come with continuity of care of consultation patients and interaction and coordination with the different hospital units and services. The clinical facility in which the fellowship is based provides: 1) exposure to a broad range of patients, and 2) availability of specialty areas for more intensive experience such as the Cancer Institute, Burn Unit, Head and Neck Section of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Anesthesia Department, Renal Transplant, Pain Clinic, and Colorectal Cancer and Polyp Study Group.
The two-year fellowship for Social and Community Psychiatry incorporates the theoretical knowledge on Social Psychiatry with the skills needed for Community Psychiatry. Specifically, it aims to enhance knowledge of the fellows in training on the basic concepts of social psychiatry and the role of relevant social sciences.
