Established in 1911, the Department of Medicine is the largest clinical department of the Philippine General Hospital with 14 divisions under its wing.
A pioneer in the field of Internal Medicine, the department offers well-rounded residency and fellowship programs, fostering collaboration between expert consultants and trainees. Mutual respect and shared responsibility is observed in all service rounds and table discussions of patients cases. And with the different subspecialties involved, it is ensured that all aspects of patients’ health are addressed and accounted for.
Training under the department offers both a strong theoretical and clinical knowledge base with programs accredited by the respective national specialty and subspecialty accreditations.
A nurturing learning environment is also cultivated in the department, encouraging trainees not only to be learners but to be teachers as well. Lectures and bedside rounds with clinical clerks and post-graduate interns offer avenues to teach and highlight must-know theories and concepts in the field.
Research is also at the forefront of the Department’s training program, as consultants, fellows and residents alike are up to date with the latest diagnostic and treatment guidelines. Offering weekly department and division conferences, trainees are able to keep up with the latest health information in the management of patients. Research endeavors are also notable, as hundreds of original research outputs are presented by trainees in local and international conferences, and are eventually published in reputable peer-reviewed journals.
In its pursuit of bringing forth holistic physicians, the departments instills in its trainees the values of compassion, integrity, and nationalism. The sheer number of patients cared for and the wide array of clinical cases in the hospital not only sharpens the clinical eye, but also inculcates social responsibility and commitment in the service of the Filipino people.
Being a tertiary referral center offers trainees the opportunity of attending to patients coming from the nearest barangay to the most far-flung areas of the country. Encountering various cultural and economic backgrounds challenges the department’s trainees to be effective communicators in delivering socially relevant and cost-effective healthcare.
The Department of Medicine over the years has produced a roster of physician leaders in their respective fields of specialization. It has been instrumental in shaping future heads and innovators in the medical community both in and out of the country. It has always envisioned itself and is currently succeeding in being the catalyst for the delivery of universal healthcare to the farthest regions of the country, and to those most in need.
Vision
By 2025 the Filipino people shall be served by ethical health professionals from the Department of Medicine, who shall be globally competitive through excellence and leadership in service, training and research
Mission
To attain excellence and relevance in internal medicine and its specialties through the implementation of quality programs in primary to tertiary levels of service, training and research
From its humble beginnings in 1907, the Department of Medicine, established initially as a teaching, service, and research section of the Philippine Medical School, has evolved into what is now considered the largest clinical department of the UP College of Medicine and the Philippine General Hospital.
The Department was originally housed in the School for the Deaf and Blind along Malecon Drive (now Bonifactio Drive). Its clinical activites were held at the St. Paul’s Hospital, which had fifty beds and a dispensary. The first head of the department was Dr. William E. Musgrave, organizer of the Graduate School of Tropical Medicine and one of the founders of the Far East Association of Tropical Medicine. Assisting him were Dr. Ariston L. Bautista, a professor of clinical medicine, and Dr. Antonio G. Sison, an instructor and intern in clinical medicine.
In January 1911, the department was transferred to the PGH, recognized as the official teaching hospital of the UPCM. The onset of World War II did not deter the department from fulfilling its duties, and it persevered in its service and training by providing ECG facilities, promoting exchange programs with medical schools in the United States and Europe, recruiting foreign instructors, and initiating linkages with San Lazaro Hospital and the Quezon Institute. In spite of limited resources, the staff valiantly attended to war Casualties an patients suffering from malnutrition and ifectious diseases.
Fate dealt a cruel blow, however, when in February 1945, during the climactic days of the war, almost all of the facilities of the PGH and the UPCM were destroyed. With the help of the US Army Medical Corps, The College and Hospital struggled and resumed their operations six month later.

Comprehensive Adult Invasive Cardiovascular Medicine Services
Under the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, or the Cathlab, and the electrophysiology study (EPS) lab provide a full range of diagnostic and interventional modalities for evaluation and treatment of patients with known or suspected cardiac and peripheral vascular diseases, and arrhythmias and electrocardiac abnormalities.
Comprehensive Adult Non-invasive Cardiovascular Medicine Services
Under the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, this unit is responsible for the performance of echocardiography, electrocardiography (ECG), vascular studies of PGH patients. They also provide services for preventive cardiology, cardiac rehabilitation, and cardiac critical care, among others.
Central Endoscopy Unit
The Divisions of Gastroenterology and Pulmonary Medicine perform specialized diagnostic and interventional endoscopic procedures (upper GI endoscopy, colonoscopy, rigid and flexible bronchoscopy) in this endoscopy unit.
Hemodialysis Unit
Manned by the fellows and consultants of the Division of Nephrology, the Hemodialysis Unit provides necessary dialysis services required for the optimal management of the patient with acute and chronic renal failure. Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) is also available for critically ill patients.
Infusion Therapy Unit
Through the joint effort of the Adult and Pediatric Divisions of Allergy and Immunology, the Infusion Therapy Unit is a specialized area in the outpatient department dedicated to cater to Immunology cases. Reproductive immunology patients needing intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) and intralipid infusion therapy, as well as patients with primary immunodeficiency requiring IVIG replacement therapy are accommodated in this unit.
Medical Research Laboratory
This laboratory provides specialized diagnostic and services to the patient of PGH and other hospitals.
Pulmonary Medicine Laboratory
Under the Division of Pulmonary Medicine, this unit is responsible for the performance of various pulmonary diagnostics (spirometry, pulmonary function tests, etc.)

Medicine Service Wards (Ward 1 and Ward 3)
The Department has a 106 bed capacity in two wards (wards 1 and 3). These wards also contain a protective isolation unit in each ward for immunocompromised patients, as well as source isolation units for patients with highly infectious diseases.
Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU)
The Medical ICU has 12 beds for service patients – 9 regular beds, 1 source isolation unit, and 2 beds for elective admissions requiring critical care.
Central Intensive Care Unit (CENICU)
Due to the ongoing renovation of the old Central ICU complex, the Central ICU has been operating on a 7-bed capacity make-shift ICU since August 2018 located in rooms 618, 619 and part of the Surgical ICU. This is the dedicated unit for patients of the Department of Pay Patient Services.
Emergency Room
The Emergency Room is the primary source of patients that are to be admitted to the medical wards and intensive care units. Majority of the ER admissions are initially examined, assessed, and managed by the residents of the Department of Emergency Medicine. After initial resuscitative efforts, the patients are received under the care of the ER medical team, which is supervised by the senior Medicine residents and Medicine consultants.
Outpatient Clinics
The department holds daily weekday General Medicine Clinics from 8AM to 5PM at Rooms 122 and 123. Various subspecialties have a morning or afternoon clinic daily, as well as a “polyclinic” established as part of the OPD Reorganization last 2013.
Headed by Dr. Cecilia A. Jimeno, Vice-Chair for Research, the Department of Medicine Research Committee facilitates and regulates the functions of the Clinical Research Division, the research agenda of the department as well as the training program on research for the residents.
To increase technical knowledge on the conduct and use of research, workshops are regularly given to the trainees. These workshops, strategically scheduled within the academic year, discuss priority concerns like critical appraisal and evidence-based medicine; systematic review and meta-analysis writing, protocol development, statistical analysis, scientific paper writing, and effective oral research presentation.
The Department of Medicine Research Registry is an ongoing project. It aims to track, identify, recognize and disseminate the research outputs of trainees and consultants in the department. Completed, unpublished papers and ongoing researches are identified through this registry. All studies being undertaken by the trainees and consultants of the department are recorded along with research publication information and awards received.
Annually, the department holds Research Fora for the following categories: (1) Case Reports/Series, (2) Systematic Review and Meta-analysis and (3) Original Studies where outstanding researches done by its trainees are presented and recognized. The top three most outstanding papers from each category are awarded with Certificates of Recognition and a cash prizes sourced from the Department Research Fund and the budget from the UP-PGH EHRO.
In every Department of Medicine Commencement Exercise, the department chooses a Most Outstanding Resident for Research (Dr. Augusto Camara Award) and a Most Outstanding Fellow for Research (Dr. Clemente Gatmaitan Award) based on research output and merit. Each awardee is given a plaque of recognition and a cash prize sponsored by our distinguished consultants.
