The Virtual Museum:
A Glimpse of the Storied History of UPCM

MARITA V.T. REYES, MD (UPCM DEAN 1988-1991)

Dr. Marita V.T. Reyes was Dean of the UP College of Medicine from 1988 and 1991. She rationalized the Faculty Development Program through an equitable distribution of grants across the different departments, further developed the Regionalization Program that her predecessor (former Dean Romualdez) instituted and strategized the sustainability of the Introduction to Patient Care program. An academician and educator through and through, Dr. Reyes served as a member of the faculty of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in the College of Medicine where she promoted creative teaching-learning methods. She eventually held the position of the Chancellor of UP Manila from 2002 to 2005. She will be remembered as having championed the integrity of academic processes during the curriculum crisis in 1988 and the admissions case in 1987. Dr. Reyes also pioneered the development of research ethics review standards in the Philippines as Chairperson of the National Ethics Committee (1996 to 2016) and the Philippine Health Research Ethics Board (2006-2010).
