The Virtual Museum:
A Glimpse of the Storied History of UPCM

ALBERTO G. ROMUALDEZ, M.D (UPCM DEAN 1984-1988)

Dr. Alberto G. Romualdez was an internist who served as the Dean of the UP College of Medicine from 1984 to 1988. Dr. Romualdez emphasized the importance of public service as a physician above all else, having been the one to establish the UPCM Regionalization Program (RP) and the UP Manila School of Health Sciences in Palo, Leyte during his term as Dean. As a long-time faculty member of the College of Medicine, he sought to inspire his students and the subsequent generations of medical professionals to serve the Filipino people as both an educator and leader in the field of health. He held prominent national leadership positions, having been Medical Adviser to the Minister of Health from 1979 to 1982, Director of the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) from 1981-1984, the Department of Health (DOH) Secretary from 1997 to 2001, and was heralded by some as a pioneer of universal healthcare in the Philippines.
